For years our strength training research programs have encountered one drawback that has undoubtedly affected our results, namely, a slower rate of progression than we think is optimal. Although we have worked diligently to encourage our participants to increase their weightloads upon reaching the end point of their prescribed repetition range, we have not been as successful as desired. Jeff Bissonette's SLED System is a sensible approach to solving this problem, and it is as profound as it is simple. Although it is not hard to implement, it leads to much better resistance progression that in turn facilitates better results. Wayne L. Westcott, Ph.D., is fitness research director at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy, MA. He is strength training consultant for numerous national organizations, such as the United States Navy, the American Council on Exercise, the American Senior Fitness Association, and the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, and editorial advisor for many publications, including Prevention, Shape, and Club Industry magazines.
